When I Hear This, I Think of This

While many of you are probably getting your Christmas music fix on, I went old school and busted out my cd's from college.  For some reason the last several days I have been in the mood for Big Head Todd and the Monsters and Blues Traveler.  As I was blasting Big Head Todd's, "Sister Sweetly"  I started thinking back on my freshman year of college.  Then I started thinking how random to think of such a LONG time ago.  Then I started thinking how there are just some songs that you associate with certain people, events, or moments.  You will now realize I am a) even more random and weird then you originally realized and b) I clearly have a very bizarre range of music tastes.

1.  Michael Jackson's Thriller album.  Whenever I hear any song from that album I think of the girl who lived down the street from me when I lived in New Jersey.  I have no idea what her name is.  She wasn't part of my usual crew, she was sort of random.  But what I do remember is that she scratched my Thriller album (yes- it was a record).  I am sure she has turned into a successful, responsible adult.  In my head, she's the record scratcher.

2.  Fugee's "Killing Me Softly" reminds me of one of my summers as a YMCA Summer Camp Counselor.  The kids LOVED that song.  We listened to it ALL the time.  To this day when I hear it, I remember being upstairs, playing Four Square, getting ready to serve snack, and the kids all dancing and singing loudly to it.

3.  Sublime- anything off of the 40oz to Freedom cd reminds me of the Summer of '96.  That is the first summer that I did not go home from college.  I stayed in the sorority house with a bunch of my friends.  It was by far my most irresponsible summer ever and as a result, my most fun summer.

4.  Sheryl Crow- everytime I hear her Sheryl Crow cd I think of my roommate from the Summer of '97, when I stayed in Rock Hill and lived in an apartment with several good girl friends.  I was a smidge more responsible this summer- but not much.

5.  Heart "Crazy."  I think of my mother.  Not because she is crazy, but because she loved that song and would blast it on her stereo when I was a little kid.  Now she blasts some weird head banger stuff my brother introduced her too (she might be more random than I am).

6.  Conway Twitty's "Tight Fitting Jeans."  Makes me think of my parents. I don't know why.  They had something with that song and when I hear it I think of them.

7.  Brad Paisley's "Mud on the Tires."  I will always think of Doug.  Everytime I hear that song I think of him and smile.  That song was popular when he bought his Chevrolet truck.  It was back before we had cool phones and ipods, and so when we drove home in his new Chevrolet truck (a lyric in the song), I sang the song to him, since we couldn't instantly download it.  Doesn't it sound romantic?  HAH!  You've never heard me sing!  I suck!!!!  I am the WORST singer- but I sing with enthusiasm, and that's all that counts- right?  So when I hear that song, I remember that silly moment- and chuckle about how resigned Doug was that I was so silly.  (He should be used to it by now)

8.  Craig Morgan's "International Harvester."  Andrew LOVED that song.  I think it's because it had the big combine starting up at the beginning of it and because in the video there was a big combine in it.  We listened to that song a LOT.  I will always remember him as a cute 3 year old and his little voice singing with it.

9.  Indigo Girls' "Closer to Fine." I will always think of a road trip to Virginia where I saw the Girls in concert at Virginia Tech and . . . they came out into the audience and Amy came within 10 feet of me!!!!!

I thought of all of that in the 2-3 minutes "Sister Sweetly" played in my car on my way to pick up kids this afternoon.
