Trust Me, Donut Do This.

Do any of y'all remember/know that Toby Keith song, "As Good As I Once Was?"  It's a song all about how this guy isn't a young man anymore and can't do what he used to.  I became painfully aware of that today.

Over the weekend I was trying to figure out how to spend the last 4 days of my summer.  I wanted to go out knowing- I had fun these last 4 days and got in some good quality time with my kids before we head to school, and activities, and craziness.  I remembered at the beginning of summer a lot of people did Donut Crawls- on National Donut Day.  We LOVE donuts.  LOVE.  DONUTS.  That would be a fun thing to do!  So- today we did the donut crawl.  I kicked my own rear with it.

We had 6 places initially on our list.  We cut it down to 5 and truth be told, Alexa tapped out after 3, and I tapped out after 4.  Andrew was going strong.  We started with a local favorite: Donut House.  Ooooh those donuts are so dang good.  So. Dang. Good.  They're actually yeast-based dough that are fried.  They're big, pillowy, chewy, soft pieces of delight.  Since this is local- we go there at least once every 6 weeks.  I love the one with the lemon icing.  My kids love the cinnamon sugar and chocolate icing ones.  From there, we headed to a place in the NoDa area of Charlotte- Reigning Donuts.  These were fried cake donuts.  They were warm and had great texture.  They were the smallest donuts of all the places we went to.  (For the record- we got 2 donuts at each place, cut them into thirds.   Andrew was annoyed that we had to share- he hates sharing food- but I was like, "DUDE! Ain't nobody need to eat 5 donuts!"  Ahhh to be 14 and able to eat whatever the heck you want with no consequences.)

After Reigning Donuts (who also had good prices), we went to Duck Donuts over in Dilworth.  We've been to Duck Donuts at the beach- and these cake donuts are DELICIOUS.  They were hot.  Literally- so hot we had to wait a sec to eat them.  They all have the same cake donut base, and then you top them with whatever you want.  We topped them with Cookies and Cream, and Ice Cream Sandwich.  These were my favorite- but I would get different toppings, if I didn't have to share.  This is where Alexa tapped out.  She couldn't even finish hers- so Andrew- like the gallant fella he is (or vacuum gut- as Alexa called him) swooped in and scarfed it up.

Unfortunately- I forgot to take any more pictures after this.  I blame the sugar coma I was starting to go into.  After Duck Donuts we went to the Suarez Bakery over in the Park Road Shopping Area.  These donuts were gross.  Sorry.  It's a bakery- so they have a bunch of other stuff.  Really over the top decorated cookies and cakes.  The donuts were cake.  They were a bit dry, cold, and bland.  We did enjoy watching one of their bakers decorate a cake though.

Our final stop was SUGAR over near Ballantyne.  These are gourmet donuts.  Gourmet being- the price.  It cost more to buy 3 donuts here (I bought one to take to Doug from this place.  This is the only place he got a donut.  I'm a great wife, what can I saw.  hahahaha) than from Reigning, Duck, and Suarez put together.  I bought 2 banana pudding donuts, and one sugar cookie donut for Alexa to eat later.  I took a bite of the banana pudding donut.  Again- these were cold.  They used the donut as a "bun" and put the banana pudding between the slices of donut.  They're banana pudding was eh.  Clearly they didn't have a church lady make their banana pudding.  I didn't taste the sugar cookie.  I believe it was a sugar cookie dough- between a donut "bun."  It looked like too much sugar and I seriously doubt Alexa eats it.

We came home, and laid on the couch. I took an hour nap- and then got up and ate a slice of cheese with some pepperoni because I can't face carbs . . . ever again because i'm just not as good as I once was.  Next time I do a food crawl (I'm thinking ice cream . . . ) I think I can stop at 3 stores.
